The introduction to the “New Media Design” article enumerates a variety of facts and beliefs about the realm of graphic designs, as well as some of the misconceptions and uses of the field. Graphic design refers to the textual and visual information as it is arranged, formed, and communicated within a variety of mediums. Different types of graphic design include typeface, editorial, environmental signage, posters, corporate identity, packaging, general information, and media related graphics. When the different types were being described, it made me really examine the plethora of multifarious graphics that surround us to the point that sometimes it is difficult to remember that every graphic, construction, and image we see has been created by someone with a very specific purpose. Additionally, the differences between old and new media demonstrate the huge impact that the creation of graphics have on specific audiences. The incorporation of interactivity and the ability to enable audiences to act is significant difference between old and new media. The use of the computer makes the characteristics and functions of the new media possible. The possibilities for the future of graphic design and new media has led some to believe that even new modes of communication are being formed that will need to be defined. This article provides a basic background of the field of graphic design but also emphasizes its role and importance within everyday life - a form of communication that yields meaning and understanding for its various audiences.

  2. "..sometimes it is difficult to remember that every graphic, construction, and image we see has been created by someone with a very specific purpose." I completely agree with this statement. Reading it brought me back to my license exam where we had to identify the road signs. I had not studied for the test and only lived in South Florida my whole life, yet I was able to identify each and every sign, even those which I had never seen. This was because the designers came up with a very specific concept that I easily understood. My favorite aspect of new media is the interactivity. I am glad that people can create media and basically become graphic designers in their living room. Children are growing up learning the skills they might need for a career in their future. It is truly amazing to me that my mother is clueless about the internet, yet my little brother has a facebook and youtube account.

  3. before reading this article i had a very ignorant view of graphic design. like how you mention in you blog, graphic design is very broad subject. it is very signicant to society because without it things can be difficult to understand. how do you feel about the media in the future for our kids?

  4. This is a swell response to the reading. One really doesn't notice how much graphic design/designers surround us every, single, solitary day. Really, everything that we look at has some sort of design influence, right? To be in the shoes of a designer--creating the things people look to, look for. The guiding images of life! The article's depth and clarity on the field was indeed very engaging and prompted me to want to know more about how our career paths as EWM majors can intertwine with graphic media.
